Switching Off To Recharge My Batteries

I used to love going to a coffee shop and reading for a couple of hours. I would find the comfiest seat I could, order my chai latte and settle in with my book/magazine/paper and sit there and enjoy my own company. It was so, so lovely. But I’ve not done that in years and I miss it. So when E.ON contacted me to say that they wanted me to relax and recharge for a couple of hours and tell you how I did it, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to do what I missed so much and that which filled up my cup; literally and figuratively.

New research by E.ON has revealed that 42% of Brits admit to having lower energy levels at this time of year and needing a recharge and around half of us are feeling more drained this year, compared to last which is a little crazy! We must have all had super busy 2018’s! I know I have as it was my first year doing the blog full time and doing two Glow Summits which are huge projects in themselves but I’ve loved them so much. I’ve had to really focus on my health and wellness though and taking time out to recharge has actually been quite a struggle. Nearly a quarter (23%) of us are saying we feel more drained because we’ve not had time to recharge our mind, body or soul’s, so I thought I would share my tips on how I’ve been prioritising my self care so maybe it sparks some ideas for you too. 

Firstly, figure out what YOU love to do to recharge your batteries. Does it involve the outdoors, or exercise, or sleeping in or making a delicious meal? I used to love going to a coffee shop so that’s what I did for my two hours out and I tried something new. I walked to my favourite place so I got some fresh air, I ordered a chai latte because it’s utterly delicious and a bit of a treat for me, and then I found the comfiest seat I could and settled in for some ‘me’ time. I made sure I was intentional about all my actions because we go through life on super sonic speed, never stopping to check if the decisions and actions we’re taking are moving us closer to where we want to be and the outcome we want to achieve. So, taking a little more time to consider how I was going to make the most out of my two hours of recharging was at the forefront of my mind.

Then instead of just reading a book, I also tried mindfulness colouring in. It’s something I’ve never actually done before but oh my goodness I got addicted soooo quickly! There’s nothing like zoning out from everything and everyone else around you and being in the moment, even if it is just colouring in between some lines. There is something so satisfying about it and I’ve even started doing it in the evening to help process the day and start to switch off from my phone.

I checked in with my breathing as well, which sounds slightly woo-woo but if you’ve been following me for a little bit then you’ll know I’m all about breathing fully and deeply to let our PNS (parasympathetic nervous system) know we are safe so it can carry out the necessary tasks it needs to in our system rather than thinking we are under attack all the time and being in a constant state of fight or flight mode. If you’re new to meditation or intentional breathing, then all you need to do is breathe in for 5, hold for 5 and then breathe out for 5. It’s really that simple.

Finally, I turned off my phone. I put it into flight mode which is something I do every night around 9.30pm so that it doesn’t interfere with my sleep or distract me from my ‘me’ time. It makes me feel calmer, helps me sleep better and feels so nice not having to feel like I’ve got to answer messages that come in every ten minutes. Turning my phone off is the ultimate luxury now and I absolutely love doing it.

At the end of the two hours, I felt happier, calmer and ready to actually go and do some productive things with the rest of my day! It’s crazy how just two hours to yourself can help your stress levels drop, put a huge smile on your face and remind you that time for you, really is essential.
