Ever washed your face with a potato? Nope, nor me. Until now. It’s not like your normal potato that you have with cheese and beans in, it’s a special potato. Called Konjac. Cute by name and when magically converted into a sponge, cute by nature too. Konjac is a plant that is native to Asia, grows at super high altitudes, is 97% water and it’s PH is neutral which is a super great start if you want to create a beauty tool out of it. That’s what the gorgeous Michele Riley decided to do. She discovered a similar product that beauty savvy Japanese girls were using and when using one herself and loving it, decided to create her own version for the western world.
When I first tried one of the sponges* (the 100% pure konjac sponge – there are lots more for different skin types which is amazing!), I doused it in water and the little hard ball turned into the sofest, cutest little facial sponge ever! It gilded across my skin gently yet effectively and was even gentle enough to remove my eye make-up. I was in love. I’m usually a die-hard bamboo cloth fan but this little sponge is now a key player in my skincare routine.
So I wanted to talk to the Michele to find out more about these little sponges of amazingness and what other top beauty tips and tricks she had up her sleeve. Introducing the fabulous, Michele Riley.

What is The Konjac Sponge Company and why did you set it up?
The Konjac Sponge Company is a natural beauty tool company. We focus on simple yet ultra effective products. We pride ourselves on being premium, completely natural and vegan and cruelty free registered. We have a unique patented formula and are now proudly multi award winning. I set up the company because I had super sensitive skin, and found a gap in the market for this amazing Japanese based product. I took the product and westernised it, since the western world had never heard of this product. Our sponges are slight variations on the original Japanese more basic product. Our patented formula has been created after years of research and experimentation to get the right formula and texture of sponge. Our closely guarded secret ensures now, that though other companies have tried to mimic our sponge (often using our images and words too!) they cannot recreate our beautiful and unique cleansing experience! My background was organic and natural baby products, so the natural world was always where my heart lay.
Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?
Because our skin absorbs way too many chemicals and impurities through modern living, that we have no idea what is going on under our skin and racing around our systems. Keep it pure and simple.
What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?
As above! Less is more and we should all be much more mindful of our own skin and health, as well as the environment which we are leaving for future generations.
Do you have a daily beauty routine, and if so, could you share it with us?
I have the simplest skincare system in the world. Twice a day, I cleanse with a Konjac sponge, nothing else at all! Since I have very sensitive skin and water soluble makeup, I do not need any additional cleansers. I then wear mineral blusher over a tinted moisturiser (natural ones of course) and a plain water soluble mascara. In the evenings after my cleanse I love to use Phytomone moisturiser.
What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
Keep it simple. Less is more. But never ever go to bed in your make up. Oh, and when you are younger and have spots, avoid over drying the skin with nasty chemicals too, over all, they just make the skin worse!
What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?
My sponges of course are number one and two (face and body) after that I am a firm follower of good old Boots No 7 mascara for sensitive eyes, and Phytomone Pause Hydro Creme (its my latest rave find! Its not cheap, but it makes my skin feel amazing.
Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?
Laughter: laughter is the biggest buzz for both the inside and the out. I may be getting old, but to be honest, my head still thinks I am 13 in my sense of humour. I am know for my childish pranks and laughter. Other than that (which beat everything in my book) other than that drink lots of water and don’t ever eat as much chocolate as I do!
What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?
What, other than my Eye pads? Maybe I am just too big headed, but these are just so unique! (*runs to buy them)
What are your plans for The Konjac Sponge Company in the future?
Just to keep doing what we do best! Premium products, that are always ahead of the game. Developing new ranges and new products, like our eye pads and face cloths. https://www.konjacspongecompany.com/shop/facial-sponges/konjac-angel-cloth.html just watch our website, there is plenty more up our sleeves!
