Sleep. I need some decent sleep now. I’m pooped. It’s an area that all of us need to function efficiently, effectively and most importantly, happily. I am a raging bull when I don’t get enough sleep and I know so many of us are sleep deprived. And when we don’t get our 8 hours a night, we become less than glowing. That’s why I interviewed one of the most amazing guru’s in this area who has studied wellbeing for the last 25 years and specialises in helping us get a sound night’s sleep, without the need for sleeping aids. Sounds a little too good to be true right? Well, it’s not.
Anandi has been in the health and wellness arena for 25 years and for the past 5 years has been focusing particularly on helping people sleep and breathe properly through helping them create a ritual through Ayurveda, breath work, yoga, meditation and holistic healing. So what makes her qualified to teach this then? She began her studies as a fitness and personal trainer which then moved onto studying yoga and spending over 500 hours with her guru in India and to this day returns every year to spend more time with him. She has trained in Deepak Chopra’s Primordial Sound Meditation Course and become an instructor, is a graduate of Anthony Robbins Mastery Universuty and is a NLP instructor and hypnotherapist. She is Neom’s sleep expert, has been featured in Cosmo Magazine, The Evening Standard and Esquire. PHEW! Anandi certainly has kept herself busy.
So now you know her credentials, I got some of her time to answer some questions about sleep, what we can do to make it better and how to glow. I feel sleepy already…
What is The Sleep Guru and why did you set it up?
The Sleep Guru is designed to help bring people back into balance through Ayurveda and Yogic Science. It involves an online consultation from which I create a report (usually about 30-40 pages). I then guide the client through various changes via online conference calls, workshops and retreats. I set it up because I am an ex insomniac myself and understand how absolutely debilitating it can be and I absolutely know sleep is a question of balance.
What is so important about getting a good night’s sleep?
You need mental and physical rest which sleep gives you. Your brain needs to process everything from the day and your body needs time to nourish and renew itself. You will feel dreadful over time with lack of sleep, I promise you that!
What advice would you give to people who are struggling with getting a good night’s sleep?
Sleep is about bringing your life into balance. Look at your lifestyle, are you rushing here and there right up until bedtime checking emails and working? Do you do anything to unravel your mind like meditation on a daily basis? Are you eating stimulation foods or eating late at night? There are many, many factors, these are just a few.
Do you have a nightly sleep routine, and if so, could you share it with us?
Of course, I always eat light in the evening and mostly eat by about 7pm. I don’t work on my computer after 7.30pm, even that is quite late for me. I do 15 minutes of my surrendered breath technique as my evening practice (deep, relaxed breathing from my book shortly coming out The Surrendered Breath).
What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
Sounds naff, but ‘Get your beauty sleep’. Your face will be more relaxed and nourished if you get enough sleep! I know that by my own face for sure!!!
What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?
Clarins Baume Livres (available outside of the UK)
Can’t live without them!!!
Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside and out?
If you really want to glow, you need to breathe. Deep breathing brings oxygen and nutrients to every part of you. Your heart needs oxygen to pump, poor breathing equals poor heart function. Get out in the fresh air and breathe for at least 10 minutes every day. Also take the time to learn how to breathe properly and use the breathing apparatus to its full capacity, you will feel sooooooo different!
What are your plans for The Sleep Guru in the future?
I have my forthcoming book launching late spring/summer and I have a full retreat at a converted monastery in Umbria in May. I will be running more regular retreats and workshops especially on the breath. I am looking at my own range of Ayurvedic products for an Autumn launch. There is also another book rumbling around in my head!!!
What is your favourite product to help you sleep?
I love Neom’s Scent to Sleep range and I just love to prepare the bedroom with the candle and spray! The other product that I recommend to hard core insomniacs is Higher Nature’s Serotone 5HTP, it really is brilliant.
Can you tell us a simple meditation to follow for getting to sleep quickly?
Yes, absolutely. Lay on your back, bring your hands on your lower belly, bring 100% of your awareness to your hands on your belly and just watch what happens to the breath. Your breath will become long and deep. I recommend you have something light ‘Insight Timer’ on your iphone which has a lovely Tibetan bell timer and set it for 20 minutes, otherwise you will be tempted to give up. You may fall asleep during the process which is wonderful!
Sentences to finish.
I love natural beauty products because…..I like to live with 100% consciousness of what goes into my body, not just through my mouth, but also through my skin.
If I could tell my 20 something self, one piece of beauty advice, it would be…. Don’t sweat the small stuff!
My favourite beauty quote is… “Beauty is not in the face, beauty is in the light of the heart” Khalil Gilbran
My favourite beauty resource is…https://www.naturalhealthmagazine.co.uk
To relax I do…..Yoga Nidra (Yoga Sleep). I go to my yoga space, light a Neom Candle, snuggle myself up in a blanket, and just allow my body to dissole into the ground using my surrendered breath breathing technique (deep surrendered breathing). 30 minutes of that, then shower and in 1 hour I feel a brand new wave of energy, it’s wonderful.
The sleep mediation really does work, I’ve tried it and love it! You can find Ananadi’s site here. Why not give it a go and if you have any questions, just leave a comment below! Now time for some zzzzzzz’s.
