“Honey to the bee that’s you and me”. Does anyone remember this song from Billie Piper?! Just me, OK then…Sometimes, there comes along a buzzingly great brand that is new to the scene, get’s people talking and wins awards. Bee good is that brand. It started off as a hobby with Caroline Cavill started selling her Bee Good lip balms made from her husbands bees that he kept in Hampshire. Word got round about how amazing the products were and soon this became a full time business. Fast forward to 2015 and they won the coveted Cosmetic Executive Women awards for Best New Brand AND a huge media investment to help push them into buzzingly brilliant heights! So I just had to have a chat with the fabulous Caroline to find out more about the brand, what her beauty tips were and the best bits of beauty advice she has ever been given. Introducing the fabulous, Caroline Cavill.
What is Bee Good and why did you set it up?
Bee Good is an independent, premium British skincare company that harnesses the healing powers of British honey, propolis and beeswax from both our own bees and those of other British bee farmers. Our skincare experts lovingly combine these wonder ingredients with other powerful, botanical ingredients to enhance the skin’s natural radiance. We deliver results-driven skincare with a conscience. We create easy to use products for all ages and skin types whilst supporting British beekeepers as they protect our precious bees.
My husband Simon has been a beekeeper for many years and I love helping with the honey harvest each year. Honey is magical – like liquid sunshine, and I knew that honey along with beeswax and propolis, had been used in skincare for thousands of years. Working hard in hives across the UK, British bees are producing these wonder ingredients; honey, beeswax and propolis that are natural miracle workers for the skin. So I thought that it would be interesting to try and make some simple lip balms and hand creams as gifts for family and friends in our kitchen.
Simon has access to a library of antique bee-keeping books and he brought home copies of some basic recipes in a book from 1744 as well as some from later Victorian beekeeping magazines. I used these as a basis for creating different skincare products; it was a case of trial and error back in those very early days and our kitchen was a constant hive of activity! We were already using the Bee Good brand name on our jars of honey, so we used the same name on our balms and creams. We began selling our products at local school fairs and fetes where people loved them and started recommending my initial products to others. So that is very much where the business started and it has grown from there.
Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?
Skin is a very precious, natural thing so why not treat it with natural products? With my own sensitive skin I struggled to find something that was right for me and would end up with bottles of lotions and potions only used a couple of times as I broke out in blemishes and spots. I realised that using bee ingredients at the centre of my recipes enabled me to create natural products that worked for my sensitive skin and for the others who also tried them.
What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?
Definitely try a variety of products and find what is best for your skin type. It may be a combination of different things.
Do you have a daily beauty routine, and if so, could you share it with us?
My routine is very non-fussy. With a busy family, having time for myself is rare these days but I do try to give myself 5 minutes ‘me time’ in the morning and evening! I use our super convenient Bee Good Honey & Wild Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water to cleanse and freshen my face, neck and shoulders. Honey & Wild Flax Daily Moisturiser follows, leaving it a few minutes to work its magic. I am now ready to either apply my morning make-up or to go to sleep refreshed. With more time at the weekends I use Bee Good Honey & Propolis 2-in-1 Cream Cleanser which feels like I have treated my skin to a really thorough, deep cleanse. I also love Bee Good Honey, Borage & Echium Intensive Hand Repair for my hands, heels, knees and elbows.
What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
This came from my mother when I was younger. “Always moisturise your neck and décolletage”. We forget the amount of sun that catches this area without realising it and it can suffer from dehydration and lines and wrinkles just as much as your face can.
What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?
They have to be Bee Good’s of course! My favourites have to be my luxurious yet hard-working daily staples: Honey & Wild Water Mint 3-in-1 Cleansing Water, Honey & Wild Flax Daily Moisturiser and Honey, Borage & Echium Intensive Hand Repair.
Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside and out?
Always have something to smile about! If you are happy then you will feel good inside. Cleanse and freshen to remove the day’s grime, dirt and environmental pollutants. However long your day has been, take 2 minutes to remove your make up every night! Even a quick sweep with a cleansing water will de-clog pores and ensure happy, healthy skin!
What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?
Being a busy mum, looking for convenient yet hard-working products, I’m naturally drawn to the new multi-functional products across skincare, haircare, beauty. As long as the efficacy of products is not compromised I think we’ll see this as a key innovation going forward.
What are your plans for Bee Good in the future?
We have lots of exciting plans for 2015 onwards both in terms of new product development and also in our work supporting British bees.
We have recently started sponsoring a young apprentice bee-keeper so we’re looking forward to following his progress over the next few years and also helping to support more beekeepers as the Bee Good brand grows.
We’re launching some very exciting new products this autumn – our customers are keen to tell us what they’d like to see next, so hopefully they’ll be very pleased! We are also looking forward to the culmination of our Great British Lip Balm competition in partnership with Waitrose. Look out for our next new lip balm flavour launching exclusively in Waitrose this September!
Sentences to finish.
I love natural beauty products because…they enhance your natural radiance allowing it to shine through the way nature intended.
If I could tell my 20 something self one piece of beauty advice, it would be… moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. Being young is a given, staying young is up to you.
My favourite beauty quote is from Coco Chanel – “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”
To relax I… enjoy time with my family (although melting beeswax can also be very therapeutic!)
