What is Beauty Heroes and why did you set it up?

Beauty Heroes is a beauty discovery service and online beauty store. Our mission is to be the most trusted source for healthy beauty.  The idea for Beauty Heroes came to me a long long time ago, before beauty subscriptions were ever a thing.  I was a spa director at a prominent spa in Napa, California and I started to work with amazing clean beauty brands and their founders to create really amazing treatments in our spa.  Collaborating with these brands was very inspiring; so much went into every detail of a product and ritual of our treatments.  And I learned a lot about how much energy went into ingredient sourcing.  I started to hold trainings for my staff directly with the founders of our brands.  They too became inspired.  I then started to hold events where our clients could meet the founders and it went over really well.

My spa was also known for being really clean as I worked hard to understand ingredients and choose product lines that used only healthy ingredients.  Educating our clients about ingredients was one of our core values and was a vehicle for us to built rapport and trust with our clients. This inspired Beauty Heroes clearly defined ingredient standard so that our clients know exactly where we stand. The products we use contain none of the ingredients banned in the EU, Japan, Canada or US, ethoxylated ingredients, synthetic fragrance, phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol or any of the Ingredients on our Villains List

I also noticed that women, primarily, were coming to our spa and almost always complaining about how they have too much product.  They seemed to crave simplicity.  I addressed this by introducing clients to just one product that would address a skin concern they were having.  Or if they asked me what products I liked, I would just tell them about one- and only one Hero Product.  I decided that I’d rather they take home one thing from my spa that they loved, that I told them all about, and that worked, and that they would use and remember.  I believe deeply that we should never sell anyone anything just for the sake of selling. My hope is that our clients use products that they love, understand and trust. So, in the end, I created a service that would deliver this experience to their doorstep, one Hero Product at a time and launched Beauty Heroes.  It was a huge risk, but I am so encouraged by our community of customers and brand ambassadors who are embracing this quality over quantity way of beauty discovery.

Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?

The main reason is that they work better than products that are full of water and synthetics.  Green Beauty is more concentrated, active and beneficial for the skin, and I say that from my own experience battling seriously awful cystic acne.  The other reason that we should choose healthy products, beauty, personal care, household and lifestyle is to keep our bodies as free as possible from endocrine disruptors. I struggled with infertility and an endocrine disorder, and it was really challenging.  There is an epidemic of infertility and other hormone imbalance disorders that seem to be affecting so many of us.  It’s heartbreaking.  Anyone who has faced infertility will be able to relate, and my guess is that a lot of readers sadly will because it’s so commonplace.

What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?

Embrace it! It’s fun. There are so many great options now that are readily available.  There is no compromise. Clean beauty is better, in every single way.

Do you have a daily beauty routine, and if so, could you share it with us?

Since my skin is so much better now than it was in my twenties or thirties, I have really embraced not wearing makeup every day.  Instead, I’ll layer on products that look and feel great.  Every morning before showering, I dry brush with an ionic dry brush, so good.  I do very little in the shower and rinse my face with just water or Osmia Organics Black Clay Facial Soap.  After my shower I’ll apply a body oil like Phia’s Confidence Quantum Body Oil, it’s one of my favorites.

On my face I always mist for more water and hydration with Josh Rosebrook’s Hydrating Accelerator, then add a few drops of Vintner’s Daughter to my tinted moisturizer and massage in.  Then, I apply some sunscreen on my face and neck and a swipe of Modern Minerals lip-gloss.

In the afternoons I will usually drink some green tea and apply some of Mahalo Skin Care’s The Rare Indigo™ beauty balm to my chest, it helps me stay centered, uplifted and focused.

At night I do In Fiore’s 4-2-4 cleansing method to wash my face.  This oil cleansing method was the final key to clearing my acne.  I never really ‘got’ oil cleansing until I tried In Fiore’s Lustra and Treate cleansers.  They work perfectly together and made a dramatic difference in my acneic skin.  After my cleanse it’s kind of a free for all.  I use whatever I feel like using.  I focus on using products that feel and smell great.

What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?

Beauty is as beauty feels.  It’s the theme of our June Beauty Heroes box and it’s so simple.  You are only beautiful if you feel beautiful.  Focus on feeling beautiful.

What are your top 3 favourite beauty products?

An impossible question, of course.  I’ll give you 3 that are very unique that I love.

The Petal mask by Mahalo Skin Care is unlike anything else on the market.  The consistency takes some getting used to, I mix it with a tiny bit of hot water to loosen it up and then apply.  It’s such an amazing product – I could literally use it every day.

SkinOwl’s Mangosteen Beauty Drops PM is also really unique.  It’s a true face oil, with a super clear and clean consistency and crisp, sweet aroma.  It works so well for overnight renewal and to balance the skin, it’s pretty special.

Modern Minerals Lip Gloss, in any color.  Diane the founder paired up with Katie Hess, founder of Lotus Wei and has infused her lip-glosses with flower essences.  I am truly addicted to the formula of these glosses.  They feel great on the lips and also smell amazing.

Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?

Turmeric is one of my secrets to glowing skin.  I take 1,000 mgs twice a day and I really see a difference in my skin. It’s brighter, more even toned and smoother. I noticed a visible difference when I doubled my intake from 500 mgs to 1,000, it’s amazing.

Exercise regularly and as intensely as you can. I credit getting my hormones balanced in part to high intensity exercise.  I found my body could handle a lot more intensity than I gave it credit for, and when I exercise at a high intensity regularly, my hormone levels balanced out and my skin got a lot clearer.

On the outside, I love facemasks.  I apply a mask at least twice a week, sometimes 3 or 4 times a week if I’m really present.  And if I’m lucky, I’ll work in a soak in the tub.

What is the most exciting beauty invention you have seen this year?

Since turning I’ve entered my 40’s I’ve noticed my brows and lashes are thinning, so right now I’m testing Plume’s all natural lash and brow thickening serum.  I’m excited to see the results.

What are your plans for Beauty Heroes in the future?

My goal is for Beauty Heroes to be your most trusted source for healthy beauty.  With our clearly defined and very strict ingredient standard for all the products we deliver in our subscription and beauty store we hope to be a trusted resource and grow our community.

I also hope to continue to inspire others to choose their beauty wisely. To use less, and love more. To spend less and spend better.  Use only what you need.  It’s a different message than the traditional sales pitch to buy more beauty, all the time.  I decided to write a book that talks about my own journey as I navigate my way through using less and loving more as a woman, wife, mother and entrepreneur.

Beyond that, I’m finding new ways to connect you to products that are truly worth your time and attention, and continue to deliver one Hero Product at a time.

Sentences to finish.

I love natural beauty products because…

…. they are more than non-toxic, they’re good for me.

If I could tell my 20 something self, one piece of beauty advice, it would be…

“…look for endocrine disruptors in everything you use on your body and home and get them out of your routine, they’ll cause you lots of problems.”

My favourite beauty quote is…

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty, – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.”

– Keats

My favourite beauty resource is…

Sarita Coren. Full stop. I love the way she writes on the topic of beauty and how much care she puts into every photo and article about brands that deserve to be celebrated.

I am really looking forward to seeing and learning from all the speakers participating in The Glow Summit.  I think we can all learn from and inspire each other.
