I love perfume. I love the smell, the bottle it comes in and everything it encompasses. But it HAS to be organic. AND ethical. It’s a tough little conundrum I often find myself in. But whilst knee deep in research trying to find the perfect partner for me, I stumbled across The 7 Virtues and it was love at first sight. Their mission is to make perfume, not war and they do this through buying from local farmers in countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti and The Middle East and encouraging others to do the same. The result is some pretty amazing products that make you feel all warm and fuzzy on this inside, knowing where you’re money is going and who it is helping. So I wanted to chat to the incredible founder Barb Stegemann so my lovely glow getters could learn more about this unique and fabulous brand. Introducing Barb Stegemann…
What is The 7 Virtues and why did you (why was it) set it up?
The 7 Virtues Beauty Inc was named after a book I wrote to empower women, The 7 Virtues of a Philosopher Queen – a woman’s guide to living & leading in an illogical world. I chose the four stoic virtues that men have used throughout the centuries to live and lead through challenging time and added three more specific to women. The 7 Virtues are Wonder, Moderation, Truth, Courage, Justice, Wisdom & Beauty. The fragrance collection is the thesis rising up out of the book, that women own the buying power, let’s harness it to reverse issues of war and poverty.
Why should people choose natural/organic beauty products?
In this modern day and age, there is no reason why one should have added phthalates or parabens in their beauty products. There are just so many wonderful options out there today to make healthier choices.
What advice would you give to people who are new to natural/organic beauty?
Have fun, share info, try things out, research.
Do you have a daily beauty & hair routine, and if so, could you share it with us?
Beauty is unique to everyone. It begins with what we eat, sleep, are loved, how much we laugh, exercise. For me, I have hereditary rosacea, it used to really upset me. Doctors had misdiagnosed it as adult acne, it was so upsetting. I finally when to a skin care specialist and we use IPL, laser procedure and it is gone! To ensure I don’t have flare ups, switched from my pots of delicious coffee to organic green tea. That made a huge difference.
I use coconut oil in my hair, on my face. I wear sunscreen every day.
What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
What are your top 3 favourite beauty & hair products?
Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (Wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?
Do what you love, every day. Never compromise your ethics. I have quit jobs in the past to go out on my own and launch my companies. This is your life. Life is for living. Share your gifts. Your gifts are not yours to keep to yourself. They are for sharing.
For skincare and cosmetics, I love a tinted moisturizer like Aveeno. I love bronzer for the glow over my sunscreen and vitamin e on my lips.
What are your plans for The 7 Virtues in the future?
We will continue to work with nations rebuilding to support families who have experienced war or strife. We will be launching candles with organic essential oils from our faremrs in Haiti, Rwanda, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
There is a documentary film on our story being released in 2016. You can watch the trailer her www.PerfumeWar.com
